FAQ FAQ

Minimize

This guide provides answers to your transfer questions and resources to help you become a successful transfer student.

What is meant by a "transfer degree?"

That generally refers to the Associate of Arts (AA) or the Associate of Science (AS) degree. The courses listed in those degrees may not be specific to any particular major. The courses are usually called "general education courses" or "gen eds" and are also referred to as Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36).

Can I stay at Lakeland to finish my four-year degree?

Depending on your major, there may be a University Partnership program which allows you to continue taking courses on our campus, but as the student of a four-year institution earning a bachelor or graduate degree.

Can I transfer credits to private or out-of-state institutions?

Not a problem. Lakeland Community College is nationally accredited and our courses are recognized by all other accredited colleges across the country.

How do I know what specific courses to choose?

Yes, it is a large list. Remember, these are the "gen eds" that were mentioned. You have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of courses that will transfer to a four-year institution. You can also meet with a Lakeland counselor to discuss your options.

Ohio Consortium For Transfer Pathways To The Liberal Arts

Lakeland Community College is a member of the Ohio Consortium for Transfer Pathways to the Liberal Arts. This is a group of 25 two-year and four-year colleges working together to provide clear, consistent transfer pathways in biology, English and psychology for community college students transferring to one of the participating colleges in Ohio.

The Benefits of Transfer Pathways

Transfer pathways provide assurance that your courses from Lakeland will transfer smoothly toward your bachelor's degree at one of Ohio's participating colleges. You'll transfer with most general education courses complete in your selected major. With an associate degree, you can transfer to one of the participating colleges as a college junior, with your earned credits counting toward your bachelor's degree.

These transfer pathways align with the Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTPs) in biology, English and psychology. These ensure that associate degrees from Ohio's community colleges provide a clear path to colleges and universities across Ohio.

Lakeland Community College and participating Ohio institutions signed a transfer pledge as our commitment to your success. Check with a transfer adviser at your selected participating college to make sure you meet GPA and other admission requirements.

Transfer Credit Procedures Transfer Credit Procedures

Minimize

Lakeland Community College will grant transfer credit for courses completed at other colleges and universities according to the following guidelines:

  • Only official transcripts will be used in the evaluation process. Official transcripts must be forwarded directly from the sending institution to the Student Service Center of Lakeland Community College.
  • Credits must have been earned at an institution which is accredited by one of the regional associations listed below:
    • Higher Learning Commission
    • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
    • New England Association of Schools and Colleges
    • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
    • Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Only non-remedial courses with a grade of "D" or higher will be accepted in transfer.
  • Non-remedial courses with grades of "pass" and "satisfactory" are accepted for transfer.
  • Only course credits and credit hours are transferable; previous grade point averages do not transfer.
  • Course work completed at schools which are not regionally accredited and/or not candidates for accreditation will not be transferable; however, the dean of the academic division in which the course is offered at Lakeland may grant credit at his/her discretion.
  • In most instances, transcripts from institutions outside the United States will need to be evaluated by an independent credit evaluation organization at the student's cost.

Transfer students may be required to provide college catalog(s) and/or course syllabi and names of textbooks used in courses to the Transfer Center at Lakeland to ensure thorough transfer credit evaluations.

Suggestions for Successful Transfer Planning
  • Decide early that transferring to a four year university to complete your bachelor's degree is your goal.
  • Work closely with a Lakeland Community College counselor as well as with the advisor at your intended transfer school in order to select the appropriate courses based on the requirements of the transfer school.
