Lakeland CLEP Testing

The College Board provides the opportunity for students to obtain college credit for introductory-level courses by taking special examinations. These tests are offered through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and the tests are provided at authorized examination sites. Lakeland Community College is an authorized CLEP testing location.

What is the advantage of taking a CLEP examination?

Students who feel their knowledge base is strong in certain introductory-level college courses can test out of them through the CLEP examinations. If their scores meet the requirements, students can receive college credit at state of Ohio-funded colleges and universities. Gaining credit through CLEP examinations can markedly reduce the number of classes required to graduate with a degree or certificate and save time and money.

How much does it cost?

Students interested in taking a CLEP examination must register and pay for each test. Costs include the $93 charge paid to the College Board for the specific CLEP test and an administration fee from the testing site.

At Lakeland, the administration fee is $25 per test.

Lakeland Community College is a certified DANTE-funded testing center for the U.S. military. Military personnel, their family members and civilians employed in the military have special conditions and payment options for CLEP examinations. Click here for more information.

How do I register for a CLEP test?

To register to take a CLEP examination, follow these steps:

  1. Create an account at the College Board website.
  2. Register for your desired exam.
  3. Pay the CLEP examination fee.
  4. Name the colleges or universities that you want to receive your score report.
  5. To take a test at Lakeland, name Lakeland as the testing site.
  6. Pay the $25 Lakeland administration fee.
  7. Lakeland currently administers CLEP exams on Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. - noon when the test center is open.
  8. Bring a driver's license or a photo ID to Lakeland's Test Center on the day of the examination. For those eligible under the military's DANTE program, bring your military ID (New Geneva Conventions Identification Card – CAC Identification Card).

Where do I go to take a CLEP test at Lakeland?

Lakeland Community College Test Center is located in room A-1044e on the first floor of the A-Building.

How can I prepare for a CLEP test?

CLEP offers a booklet called "Guide to the CLEP Examinations" that provides more information about the examinations and includes sample questions. The booklet and sample tests can be found at the College Board website.

There is also a study guide on reserve in the Lakeland Library, and there are copies or sale in the Lakeland Bookstore.

How do I find out my test results?

An unofficial score report can be printed at Lakeland's testing site. Students can access their score by logging back into their "My Account" at the College Board website. The College Board will send the official score to the college or university named by the student.

What are the scores I need in order to pass a CLEP test at Lakeland or other colleges? What classes and credits are matched to CLEP tests?

The State of Ohio, working with public institutions of higher education and statewide faculty panels, has developed policies to recognize students' prior learning and to facilitate the articulation and guaranteed transfer of such learning between Ohio's public colleges and universities.

College credit is guaranteed for students who achieve an established College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) test score for exams that have been endorsed statewide as college level. Statewide faculty panels aligned CLEP exams to equivalent Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36) and Transfer Assurance Guide (TAG) courses, as appropriate. If an equivalent course is not available for the CLEP exam area, by default, endorsed elective or area credit will still be awarded and applied toward graduation.

Specific endorsed alignments and scores for individual CLEP exams that are outlined in the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Endorsed Alignment Policies document are available on the Ohio Department of Higher Education website.

View Lakeland Community College's required CLEP scores, course alignments and credits here.

If you are sending your scores to an Ohio private college or a private or public college outside of Ohio, we strongly urge you to contact the college before taking the CLEP to find out their CLEP policy
