The Lakeland Community College campus police department exists to protect and serve the college community with fairness, respect, and compassion.
We are committed to the anticipation and prevention of crime and the protection of life and property; preservation of peace, order, and safety; enforcement of federal and state laws and college ordinances; safeguarding of constitutional guarantees; and support of the institution's various missions within the Lake County Community College District.
We have come to believe that at Lakeland Community College, "security" is a process coordinated by the campus police that requires commitment and involvement on the part of the entire college community. We are dedicated to the enhancement of the quality of life on the Lakeland campus and will attempt to fulfill this important obligation by working as a team to effectively implement the concept of community-oriented policing within this complex environment.
Lakeland's police department bears primary responsibility for safety on campus. Operating as an autonomous police district since 1975, Lakeland police officers are trained in law enforcement, fire safety, first aid, and hazardous materials disposal, and exercise full police powers. The campus police department operates a 24-hour emergency communications and dispatch center linked directly to a regional, statewide, and national communications system. Campus police communications officers continuously monitor security cameras and alarm systems, and handle walk-in clients at the dispatch desk. The police department is also directly involved in other aspects of campus safety. Police personnel conduct regular crime prevention workshops with various groups on campus.
In November 2016, the Lakeland Community College Police Department joined over 450 Ohio law enforcement agencies who have received certification by the Ohio Collaborative. The Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board was created from Executive Order 2015-04K, signed by Governor Kasich in April 2015. Comprised of a 12-person panel of law enforcement experts and community leaders, the collaborative establishes state standards regarding agency policies and operations. These standards cover a broad spectrum of topics within law enforcement, from communications centers to use of force policies. One of the duties of the Lakeland Campus Police Department is to monitor, maintain and enforce parking on Lakeland College grounds. Student parking is available at NO CHARGE to students and visitors and is conveniently located around the college. The college also offers a FREE shuttle bus service, in partnership with Laketran. Students and visitors may not park on the grass, over yellow lines, in faculty/staff parking or in handicapped parking without a valid handicapped permit. No overnight parking is permitted without permission from the Lakeland Campus Police Department.
Remember, if you are parked in a handicapped spot with a valid permit, the person to whom the permit was issued MUST be present. If you are found using a permit that does not belong to you, you may be cited or arrested per Ohio Revised Code.
We have received numerous complaints of vehicles being illegally parked in handicapped spaces. We are aggressively patrolling these areas and taking enforcement action against violators. Please make sure your handicapped permit is valid, issued to you, and visible. If you see violations, please contact the Police Department.
When pulling into a parking space, please be aware of the vehicles around you. Do not enter what looks like a parking spot if there are two cars in front of or behind the space (triple parking). You will be blocking someone in. Likewise, do not put yourself in a situation that would allow you to be the car being blocked in. Often, we are unable to locate the owner or assist in these situations. When in doubt, park in a different space.
Remember that when it snows, yellow lines or parking signs may be covered up. Please be careful when parking during the winter season and be aware of parking regulations, spaces and signs. If you are in doubt or have any questions, feel free to contact the Police Department.
Metered parking is for short-term, 45 minute parking only. The meters only take quarters. You are responsible for making sure that you have enough time left on your meter. When in doubt, park in the free public parking area.
The Lakeland Campus Police Department does not perform road service, but will contact the road service company of your preference to assist you. Some companies offer discounts to students.

The Federal Campus Sex Crimes Prevention, enacted on October 28, 2000, went into effect October 28, 2002. The law requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where the law enforcement agency information provided by a State concerning registered sexual offenders may be obtained. It also requires sex offenders already required to register in a State to provide notice, as required by State law, of each institution of higher education in that State at which the person is employed, carries on a vocation, or is a student.
Sexual Offenders are required to notify the Sheriff of the County in which they will reside per the Ohio Revised Code, Section 2950.04. The Lake County Sheriff's Department informs the Lakeland Community College Police Department of sexual offenders that are registered in Lake County. To view a complete listing of sexual offenders in Lake County visit the Lake County Sheriff's Department website and click on sexual offenders.
In addition, all persons convicted of violations under the laws of the United States or any other State substantially similar to an offense for which registration is required shall provide to the local agency all necessary information for inclusion with an Ohio County Sheriff within seven days of establishing a residence with the Ohio County. Any person required to register shall also be required to re-register within seven days following any change of residence, whether within the County or any other County.
Classifications of sexual offenders can be found at the Ohio Revised Code website
