The Veterans Center at Lakeland Community College relocated from the Engineering Building to a newly constructed space in the Student Center. Construction started May 18, 2023, and was completed September 2023.
Lakeland's Veterans Center serves nearly 200 veterans and their families. The college is designated as a Military Friendly® School. The new center will include offices, conference space, a computer center and lounge area.
Located on the second floor of the Student Center near other student clubs and organizations, the veterans center has access to a new shared activity center. The relocation was necessary due to the planned expansion of the Engineering building and presented an opportunity to improve student support services.
The project cost was $759,329. Funding was provided by college local funds and donor contributions.
Lakeland Community College is expanding and renovating its Engineering Technologies building to ensure job training meets employer needs in advanced manufacturing and applied engineering.
The project will modernize most of the Engineering Building's existing space (aged 38 years) and provide capacity for Lakeland to implement new programming and fulfill demand that is currently unmet in the region. Market factors indicate that demand is high for educated, entry-level manufacturing employees.
This project has local workforce support from the Lake Development Authority, Lake County Workforce Development Board, Geauga Growth Partnership, Alliance for Working Together (AWT) and many area manufacturing companies. Ohio's new Intel plant and suppliers also represent an enormous opportunity for Lakeland graduates.
The U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded a $4.2 million grant to Lakeland to renovate its Industrial Skills Training Center for Advanced Manufacturing, located on the east side of the building. The EDA investment will be matched with $3.1 million in local funds and is expected to create or retain over 900 jobs and contribute $5.2 million in private matching investment.
Lakeland's engineering advisory committees, faculty, lab instructors and student representatives were involved in the design process. The project will expand labs, improve teaching adjacencies, resolve overcrowding and safety issues, and provide student collaboration spaces.
Construction is expected to begin in Spring '24 and take 14 months. The first phase of construction is expansion of the south entry for a lobby and student collaboration space, and expansion of the industrial labs on the southwest sides of the building.
The project cost is about $20 million. Funding will be provided by state capital appropriations, the U.S. EDA capital award and college debt financing.
Lakeland Community College is committed to a program of energy conservation. The success of this program requires the cooperation of the entire College community. You can assist in conserving energy by closing windows at the end of the working day, turning off lights, air conditioners, computers and other office equipment in unoccupied areas and reporting leaking pipes and faucets to Facilities Management.
The College is also committed to providing an environment conducive to learning with appropriate lighting levels and space conditioning. The College will not sacrifice the quality of the environment just to save money. Efficiencies have been gained by upgrading lighting fixtures, installing occupancy sensors, and heating and ventilating controls. Through better energy management and conservation we will continue to save valuable resources and operational dollars without degrading the learning environment.
This project renovated and upgraded approximately 10,500 square feet of existing spaces in the A-2000 - A-2020 area. The new spaces were designed to encourage faculty collaboration and develop new and innovative processes in the manner in which education is delivered. In addition to the renovation, approximately 3,300 square feet of multipurpose and student study space requirements were captured from adjacent exterior and interior spaces for student, visitor, and employee use. The project also upgraded related infrastructure, provided enhanced energy efficiencies, and included the installation of a new 5,000 square foot green roof outside the greenhouse location. The project was completed prior to the start of Fall semester 2008.
