Admissions Requirements

Students must meet specific admission requirements for this program. Listed below are requirements for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program:

OPTION 1: High School Option

This option is for current high school seniors or high school graduates who apply to the program within two years of high school graduation. Please Note: Deadlines for submission of applications may be obtained from the admissions or counseling offices.

  • Complete college application(s).
  • Composite score of 21 or higher on the American College Test (ACT) or combined score of 1400 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
  • Complete high school algebra, chemistry, and biology with a "C" grade or better.
  • An overall high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • Meet with the program director and counselor to review program prerequisites and requirements.

Upon successful completion of the above criteria, the applicant will be admitted into the program. Students must complete HLTH 1210 (Medical Terminology) with a "C" grade or better prior to enrolling in their first health technology course.

OPTION 2: College Option

This option is for students who do not qualify for admission under Option 1. Please Note: Deadlines for submission of applications may be obtained from the admissions or counseling offices.

  • Complete college application(s).
  • Submit high school transcript as well as any college transcript(s).
  • Successful passing score on the required program pre-admission test.
  • Meet with the program director and counselor to review program prerequisites and requirements.
  • The following courses, or equivalent courses at other regionally accredited colleges, must be completed with a "C" or better and have a minimum cumulative GPA in program applicable courses of 2.0 or better.
    • HLTH 1210 Medical Terminology
    • BIOL 2210 Anatomy & Physiology I

NOTE: Students must meet one of these requirements to take BIOL 2210:

  1. High school biology within last five years and high school chemistry.
  2. High school biology within last five years and CHEM 1100 Elementary Chemistry.
  3. Biology 1200 Fundamentals of Biology for the Health Technologies.

Essential Functions

Medical laboratory technician students must have abilities and skills as follows:

  1. Observation: Students should be able to characterize color, odor, clarity and viscosity of biologicals, reagents or chemical reaction products. Therefore, students must possess functional use of the seneses of smell, vision and somatic sensation.
  2. Communications Students must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively orally and in writing with all members of the healthcare team. Students must have the ability to read and comprehend written material in order to correctly and independently perform laboratory test procedures.
  3. Psychomotor Skills: Students must possess gross and fine manual dexterity sufficient to handle specimens or reagents and phlebotomy equipment and perform analytical procedures requiring the use of small, delicate tools, equipment and instruments. Students must possess vision and dexterity which allows them to focus and view specimens using a binocular microscope.
  4. Intellectual/Conseptual and Cognitive Abilities: Students must be able to measure, calculate, reason, analyze, synthesize, integrate and apply information. Students must be able to use sufficient judgment to recognize and correct performance and problem solve unexpected observations or outcomes of laboratory procedures.
  5. Behavioral and Social Attributes Students must possess the emoptional health required for full utilization of his or her intellectual abilities, the exercise of good judgment and the prompt completion of all responsibilities attendant to the performance of laboratory testing. Candidates must also be able to tolerate taxing workloads, function effectively under stress, adapt to a changing environment, display flexibility and function independently in the face of uncertanties or problems that might arise.
  6. Ethical Standards: Students must demonstrate professional demeanor or behavior and must perform in an ethical manner in dealing with peers, faculty, staff and patients.
  7. Academic Performance Students must be able to obtain relevant information from lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, clinical laboratory practicums and independent study assignments.

Autumn Reynolds Lakeland has been a very enriching and welcoming experience, making way for a great transition from high school to college. My experience here has been incredible so far.
