KIRTLAND, Ohio (August 7, 2015) – Shardonay (Shar) Miller has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball program for the 2015-16 season. Miller was a member of the National Honor Society while earning four varsity letters in softball, two in basketball, and one in volleyball at Grand Valley High School.
Miller earned all-county honors in softball as a freshman, sophomore, and junior while also garnering third team all-district accolades in basketball. The Cherry Valley, Ohio native was named all-conference in both sports and helped guide the Mustangs to a sectional championship on the hardwood as a senior.
The daughter of John and Shelly Miller plans to major in biology at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "We're very pleased Shar is coming to Lakeland. She's a very good student. She will compete behind the plate and give us some depth at first base. Shar brings another bat to our roster."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (July 1, 2015) – Kirtland High School standout Casie Stark has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakleand Community College softball program for the 2015-16 season. Stark has one year of eligibility remaining after playing last year at Gannon University (NCAA Division II) in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Stark appeared in eight games including a pair of starts as a freshman for the Golden Knights, who went 29-16 overall and posted a 19-7 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The catcher/outfielder recorded two hits in six at-bats while scoring a pair of runs.
Gannon advanced to the PSAC championship game before dropping two straight to California University of Pennsylvania to finish as runner-up in 2015. It earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional where it posted a 1-2 record.
Prior to Gannon, Stark was a stellar four-year varsity letter winner for the Hornets. She earned first team all-Chagrin Valley Conference (CVC) honors through all four years of high school while also garnering third team (2011, 2012) and second team (2013, 2014) News-Herald all-star selections. Stark helped the Hornets to CVC championships and district runner-up finishes as a junior and senior while hitting better than .440 in all four seasons.
Prior to the start of her senior campaign at Kirtland she traveled to Amsterdam, Holland to compete with Team USA against competitors from around the world.
Coach Morganti: "Casie is very passionate about the game of softball. She played at the International level while in high school. She was a very prolific hitter at Kirtland and gives us another run-producing bat. We're looking forward having her be a part of our team."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (June 4, 2015) – Ashten Noce, a four-year letter winner and merit roll student at Edgewood High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball team for the 2015-16 season.
Noce played four years of varsity softball and two years of volleyball at Edgewood where she earned the Student-Athlete Award for four consecutive years.
The Ashtabula, Ohio native and daughter of Chrystal and Dre Ayala, Ashten plans to major in Education at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "We are adding depth to our infield and catching positions by having Ashten join our program. She is also a good student."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (June 3, 2015) – Sarah Steigerwald, an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society at nearby Kirtland High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent (LOI) to join the Lakeland Community College softball program for the 2015-16 academic year. Steigerwald marks the seventh member of the incoming class of 2016.
Steigerwald earned three varsity letters in softball and was a two-time all-Chagrin Valley Conference (CVC) selection. As a senior she captained the Hornets' volleyball, basketball, and softball teams.
She helped Kirtland capture CVC titles and sectional championships in each of her final three years on the softball team including a Division III district runner-up finish in her final scholastic season.
The daughter of Wilbert and Susan Steigerwald, she plans to major in Criminal Justice at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "Sarah comes to us from down the road at Kirtland High School. The Hornets have had some good teams the last few years. Sarah gives us another bat. She hit in the middle of the order for Kirtland. She also gives us infield depth. She's a great student. Sarah's mom and aunt are both softball alums. It's a neat story that Sarah will get to play on the same diamond."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 26, 2015) – Freshman short stop Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NJCAA Division II All-East Region team following a stellar first season with the Lakeland Community College softball program.
McKinley continues to garner postseason accolades after leading the Lakers in nearly every offensive category. She was selected to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) all-conference team and was Lakeland's lone representative on the NJCAA All-Region XII team.
She hit .430 in 27 games and closed out the season with a 22-game hitting streak - four games shy of tying the program record. She finished the year with 30 runs and 14 RBIs on 40 hits including a team-high nine doubles and six home runs. The first year short stop also led the OCCAC with 81 assists including 42 in conference play.
She was named OCCAC Player of the Week on April 22 after hitting .543 in ten games including six against league opponents.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 17, 2015) – McKenzie Wilber, an honor roll student and three-year captain of the varsity softball team at Jefferson High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball team for the 2015-16 season. An all-county and all-conference player at Jefferson, Wilber helped the Falcons win a pair of All American Conference (AAC) championships as well as OHSAA Division II district (2014) and sectional (2014, 2015) titles.
She earned Star Beacon All-Ashtabula County and all-AAC honors in each of the past three seasons with Jefferson while hitting 12 career home runs. The Rock Creek, Ohio native earned the Senior Leadership Award this year and has been named to the Honor Roll through all four years of high school.
The daughter of Don and Sherry Wilber, she plans to major in business management at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "It's great to add Kenzie to our program. She comes from a successful Jefferson softball program. She's a versatile player with a power bat. She will also see some time in the circle for us."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 17, 2015) – Lakeside High School's Andrea Davis has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball program for the 2015-16 season. The Ashtabula, Ohio native is a merit roll student who played three years of varsity softball at Lakeside. She earned the Coaches Award while also competing as a member of the volleyball team.
The daughter of Pete and Kathy Davis, she plans to major in Early Childhood Education at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "Andrea gives us a left-handed arm and much needed pitching depth. She's working hard at her craft and is also a good student. She's looking forward coming to Lakeland."

Katie Uminski (left) and Halle McKinley (right).KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 6, 2015) – Freshmen Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) and Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) of the Lakeland Community College softball team were named All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) following their first season with the Lakers. McKinley also earned NJCAA All-Region XII accolades as one of the top all-around players in the area.
McKinley paced the Lakers and ranked among the conference's leaders in nearly every offensive category. Jacey Gray and Lesley Ducat of Owens Community College were named Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, while Express head coach Marcus Smith was voted OCCAC Coach of the Year. KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 10, 2015) – Dani Heinonen, a standout student-athlete at Conneaut High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Lakeland Community College for the 2015-16 academic year. Heinonen is a four-year letter winner and two-year varsity captain of the softball team, helping the Spartans to a district runner-up finish as a junior (2014).
Heinonen has been a member of the honor roll through all four years of high school and was named 5-Star Student of the Month in November. She earned an academic letter as a freshman (2012) before garnering an academic excellence award as a sophomore (2013) and junior (2014).
In addition to softball, she earned two varsity letters as a captain of the girls' basketball team while also competing in cross country, soccer, and volleyball.
The daughter of Daniel and Donna Heinonen, she is undecided on her major at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "Dani is a very good student. On the softball field she gives our infield depth and versatility. She also demonstrates good leadership skills. Her Conneaut team is having a phenomenal year and she is an integral part of its success."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 25, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team went 1-1 with visiting Ohio Christian University on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 12-4 in five innings before dropping the finale 16-14. The Lakers move to 6-21 overall entering Wednesday's non-conference double-header against Allegheny County at 3:30 p.m.
Game One: Lakeland 12, Ohio Christian 4 (5 Innings)
Katlyn Sartain (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) went 3-for-3 with a triple and a career-best 3 RBIs as Lakeland run-ruled Ohio Christian in the opener. Amy McDonnell (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) added two runs and double while Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) and Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) scored twice and drove in two runs each.
Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) improved to 2-1 on the year after collecting the win in the circle.
Game Two: Lakeland 14, Ohio Christian 16
Despite posting 14 runs on 19 hits and building a 12-3 lead through four innings, the Lakers dropped the finale to the Trailblazers after the visitors rallied for 13 runs in the final three innings to steal the victory.
Katie Uminski went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Kaitlyn Laseke added three hits and three runs in the setback.
Lakeland set season-highs with 19 hits including seven for extra bases. The Lakers tallied a season-high six doubles, two of which came off the bat of Amy McDonnell.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (April 22, 2015) – Visiting Lakeland dropped a pair of games to host Owens, 11-3 and 10-6, to close out the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) slate on Wednesday afternoon. The Express clinch the OCCAC title with the victory while Lakeland drops to 5-20 overall.
Game One: Lakeland 3, Owens 11 (5 Innings)
Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk while Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) extended her hitting streak to 19 games with two more in game one.
Lakeland held a 2-1 lead through 3 ½ innings before the Express put four on the board in bottom of the third and erupted for six in the fourth to take a commanding 11-2 lead.
Amy McDonnell (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored for the Lakers.
Game Two: Lakeland 6, Owens 10
Halle McKinley extended her hitting streak to 20 games with a RBI triple, but Owens plated nine runs in the first inning en route to a 10-6 victory in game two.
Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) and Rebecca Svoboda (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Nordonia) each collected two hits and an RBI while went 1-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases in the loss.
Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) suffered the loss in the circle after eight Lakeland errors led to nine unearned runs in the first.
The Lakers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they play host to Ohio Christian University at 1 p.m.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 22, 2015) – Freshman short stop Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) and sophomore third baseman Miguel Flowers II (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) were named Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Player of the Week for softball and baseball, respectively, last week.
Flowers II went a whopping 12-for-16 (.750) from the plate over four conference games against Cuyahoga Community College. In those 16 at bats, he produced one double, five RBI and two stolen bases.
Flowers II is hitting a team-high .402 with 19 runs, three doubles, three triples, one home run, 23 RBI and eight stolen bases for Lakeland (13-18, 6-8 OCCAC).
McKinley went 19-for-35 (.543) from the plate over 10 games last week. She produced 14 runs, three doubles, one triple, four home runs, six RBI, two walks and three stolen bases. In OCCAC play, she went 11-for-23 (.478) over six games while producing eight runs, two doubles, two home runs, four RBI, two walks and three stolen bases.
For the season, McKinley is 33-for-80 (.413) with eight doubles, 26 runs, one triple, six home runs, 11 RBI, five walks and seven stolen bases. She leads the team in runs, hits, home runs, and slugging percentage.

Halle McKinley extended her hitting streak to 18 games with two more against Lorain County on Sunday afternoon.
ELYRIA, Ohio (April 19, 2015) – Visiting Lakeland dropped a non-conference game to the University of Cincinnati-Clermont in game one but bounced back with a victory in game two over Lorain County to snap a three-game slide and move to 5-18 on the season.
Game One: Lakeland 2, UC-Clermont 4
Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) registered a pair of hits including a triple and scored one run while Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) hit an RBI double for Lakeland. UC-Clermont used a three-run fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit before adding an insurance run an inning later.
Lakeland's comeback attempt came up short despite cutting the deficit to just two after scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning.
Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing three runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Game Two: Lakeland 10, Lorain County 2 (5 Innings)
The Lakers' offense came alive in game two as the visitors registered 10 runs on 12 hits en route to the victory. Katie Uminski homered, scored twice, and drove in two while Halle McKinley extended her hitting streak to 18 games with two more in the finale.
Carynn McCreight (Willoughby, Ohio / Geneva) doubled and scored her first career run in the victory.
Lakeland provided more than enough run support for Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon), who earned her second career victory in the circle with the complete-game effort. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out three in the win.
Lakeland will travel to Owens on Wednesday (April 22) in its OCCAC regular season finale at 3:30 p.m.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 18, 2015) – Visiting Sinclair scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a 2-2 game and rally for a win in game two over host Lakeland. The Tartan Pride took game one, 9-6, to complete the season sweep and improve to 27-8 overall and 6-4 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Lakeland falls to 5-18 and 0-10 in the OCCAC with the losses.
Game One: Lakeland 6, Sinclair 9
Sinclair used a seven-run second inning to turn a 1-1 game into an 8-1 lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth to win the opener.
Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored, and four RBIs in the setback. Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) added three hits and a run scored for Lakeland.
Game Two: Lakeland 4, Sinclair 6
The Tartan Pride's big fifth inning proved to be the difference despite a pair of late runs for the Lakers in game two. Halle McKinely extended her hitting streak to 16 games with two more while scoring a pair of runs in the finale.
Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored while Katlyn Sartain (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) doubled and scored a run for Lakeland.
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow for their fifth double-header in six games. Lakeland will take on University of Cincinnati-Clermont at 12 p.m. and Lorain County at 2 p.m. Both games will take place on the campus of Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio.

Katlyn Sartain hit her second career home run in Friday's victory over Mercyhurst North East.
KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 17, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team took game one 9-5 before visiting Mercyhurst North East salvaged a split with a 14-2 victory in game two in non-conference action Friday afternoon. The Lakers move to 4-15 overall and will host Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) foe Sinclair tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Game One: Lakeland 9, Mercyhurst North East 5
Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) hit two of Lakeland's season-high five home runs to power the hosts in game one. The freshman short stop went 3-for-4 with two solo shots from the lead-off spot.
Katlyn Sartain (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a home run, and a double while Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) and Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) also homered for Lakeland.
Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) earned his first win in the circle after tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Game Two: Lakeland 2, Mercyhurst North East 14 (6 Innings)
The Saints scored 14 runs on 15 hits and limited the Lakers to just two runs on seven hits in the finale. Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Lakeland.
Halle McKinley extended her hitting streak to 14 games with a double and a run scored in the setback.
The Lakers host the Tartan Pride on Saturday as they search for their first conference win of the season.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 15, 2015) – Freshman Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) hit two home runs, including a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings, but visiting Cuyahoga scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth to complete the sweep on Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers will look to bounce back on Friday (April 17) when they travel to North East, Pennsylvania to take on Mercyhurst North East at 3:30 p.m.
Game One: Lakeland 4, Cuyahoga 9
Freshman Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) and classmate Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) each drove in a two runs for the Lakers, who dropped to 3-13 on the year and 0-7 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) with the setback.
Cuyahoga used a four-run second inning and a three-run third to break open a scoreless game and take a 7-0 lead. The Lakers responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth to narrow the gap to four but would not threaten the rest of the way.
Uminski finished 2-for-3 while Laseke's lone hit of the game came in the form of a two-RBI triple in the third inning. Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) took the loss in the circle after allowing three earned runs on three hits in two innings of work.
Game Two: Lakeland 5, Cuyahoga 7 (9 Innings)
The Lakers jumped out to a 4-3 lead after two innings thanks to RBIs from Wawrowski and Kaitlyn Laseke in the first and a two-run home run from Gustin in the second. The score would remain 4-3 until the top of the seventh inning, when Cuyahoga put runners on second and third with two outs. Down to their final strike, the Challengers' Ciara Gorman slapped the payoff pitch behind third base and inches inside the foul line to drive in both runners and give the visitors a 5-4 lead.
Gustin countered with her second home run of the day, this time a solo shot over the right field wall to send the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, Cuyahoga put runners on first and second via a fielder's choice and a two-out single. Freshman pitcher Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) induced what would have been an inning-ending fly out to right field, but an error allowed both runners to score and gave the visitors a 7-5 lead.
The Lakers stranded a runner at first to end the game and move to 3-14 on the year (0-8 OCCAC). Baldauf suffered the loss despite eight solid innings of relief. The right-hander scattered five hits and allowed just two earned runs.
Gustin finished with a career-high three RBIs while Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) registered two hits and a team-high seven assists at short stop.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 14, 2015) – Despite outhitting visiting Owens 7-2 in game one the Lakeland softball team stranded eight runners and dropped the opener 5-1 before falling 4-1 in the game two of an Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) twin bill Tuesday afternoon.
The Lakers outslugged the Express 7-2, but a costly error and pair of timely walks loaded the bases in the fourth inning of a one-run game.
With the sides scoreless entering the frame, Owens plated the game's first run before loading the bases for Lesley Ducat, who hit a grand slam to give the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead. It was the second and final hit of the day for the Express, who improved to 17-12 overall and 1-0 in league play with the victory.
The Lakers (3-11, 0-5 OCCAC) got one back in the bottom of the sixth after Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) drove home Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) with an RBI single to cut the deficit to four. The hosts were unable to capitalize on the hitting discrepancy despite doubles from McKinley and Amy McDonnell (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) in the loss.
Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) fell to 0-8 on the year after allowing three earned runs on just one hit in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) was credited with a pair of earned runs in less than an inning of relief before Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) hurled three perfect innings of relief to close out the game.
Taylor Wawrowski doubled and scored the Lakers only run, but suffered another loss in the circle after three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief in the finale.
Amy McDonnell added a double for the Lakers, who stall at 3-12 overall and 0-6 in league play entering tomorrow's double-header against Cuyahoga beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Lakers will look to avenge a pair of tight losses to the Challengers earlier in the season.

KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 13, 2015) – Head coach Jeff Morganti announced commitments from a pair of local student-athletes to join the Lakeland Community College softball team for the 2015-16 season. On Sunday, Taylor Rowe and Megan Stech each signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakers.
Rowe is a two-sport standout at Edgewood High School where she competes in softball and soccer. She earned four varsity letters in softball and three in soccer and was named first team all-conference and first team all-county in softball as a junior. The North Kingsville native, and daughter of Todd and Tracy Rowe, plans to major in Early Childhood Education at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti: "We're excited to have Taylor join our program. She's an exciting player to watch. She plays the game with so much energy and is a threat offensively. I know she's also excited to be a Laker."
Stech competed in volleyball, basketball, and softball at Pymatuning Valley High School where she earned conference, district, and state awards in all three sports. She earned two varsity letters as an all-star outside hitter for the volleyball team and was an all-state and all-county forward for the basketball team. She helped the Lakers win conference championships in 2012 and 2014 while also claiming district titles in 2012 and 2015. A four-year varsity player on the softball team, Stech earned honorable mention all-Northeastern Athletic Conference (NAC) as a freshman and junior and was a first team selection as a sophomore.
Coach Morganti: "We're happy to have Megan join our softball family. She will help us in the circle and is also versatile in the infield."

PARMA, Ohio (April 6, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team registered 23 hits in Monday's double-header but squandered early leads in both games and fell to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play with a pair of losses to host Cuyahoga.
Game One: Lakeland 7, Cuyahoga 10
Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, but a six-run third inning proved to be the difference as the Challengers rallied from an early hole to steal game one.
The Lakers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning after Wawrowski singled home Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison). Gustin finished 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored.
Cuyahoga answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first before adding two more in the second to build a 3-1 lead.
Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) drove in Gustin – who kept the inning alive via a two-out triple – in the top of the third to trim the deficit in half. The hosts countered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull away.
Lakeland's rally attempt in the top of the sixth saw three runs cross the plate but the gap proved to be too wide as Cuyahoga (10-10, 2-1 OCCAC) held on for the league win.
Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) fell to 2-3 on the season after allowing nine runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings. Gustin threw 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out two.
Game Two: Lakeland 2, Cuyahoga 3
Lakeland jumped out to another lead in game two, this time opening the scoring in the top of the third inning after Wawrowski's ground out plated Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) from third base.
Cuyahoga bounced back with a three-run fourth to seize control. The Challengers sandwiched an RBI double and a run-scoring triple with an RBI ground out to take a 3-1 lead into the fifth. Wawrowski led off the sixth with a double before scoring on a throwing error to cut the deficit in half, but the Lakers could not find the tying run in the final inning and dropped their fourth conference game of the season.
Uminski led the way offensively with three hits in four at-bats. Wawrowski suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in four innings. She handed the ball off to Gustin, who threw two innings of perfect relief to keep the visitors in the game.
Lakeland returns to action on Wednesday (April 8) when it travels to Clarion, Pennsylvania to take on Clarion University at 3:30 p.m.

XENIA, Ohio (March 29, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team dropped its Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) opener to host Sinclair on Sunday afternoon to fall to 3-8 on the year and 0-2 in league play.
Game One: Lakeland 3, Sinclair 19 (5 Innings)
Sinclair jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after one inning of play and never threatened the rest of the way en route to a victory in game one. Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) went 3-for-3 while Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Lakeland.

Game Two: Lakeland 5, Sinclair 10
In game two it was Lakeland's turn to race out to a fast start as the visitors put in five runs in the first two innings to take a big lead. The Tartan Pride responded with one run in the bottom of the second and four in third to level the game at five before pulling away late to complete the sweep.
Kandis Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) scored two runs while drawing a pair of walks. Gustin's lone hit of the game drove in a team-high two runs in the setback.
The Lakers will look to bounce back on Wednesday (April 1) when they host Owens at 3:30 p.m. in the 2015 home opener.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (March 21, 2015) – Visiting Lakeland recorded its first sweep of the season after scoring 30 runs in two wins over Ohio University-Zanesville on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers (3-6) will look to carry the momentum into their Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) opener on Wednesday (March 25) when they host Cuyahoga at 3:30 p.m.
Game One: Lakeland 10, Ohio University-Zanesville 1 (5 Innings)
Lakeland registered 11 hits including a season-high five homeruns to overwhelm the hosts in game one. Three players – Tayler Gustin, Katie Uminski, and Katlyn Sartain – hit their first collegiate homerun while Halle McKinley and Taylor Wawrowski hit their second of the season to power the Lakers in the opener.
Gustin finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while McKinley drove in a pair on a double and her second long ball of the season.

Gustin struck out four and walked one in five innings to earn her first collegiate win.
Kandis Laseke scored four runs and drove in two from the lead-off spot while Katie Uminski went 3-for-3 with three runs and a career-high five RBIs in the victory.

MARIETTA, Ohio (March 20, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team suffered a pair of non-league losses to host Marietta College on Friday night to fall to 1-6 on the season. The Lakers will look to bounce back tomorrow when they travel to Ohio University-Zanesville for two more non-conference games before opening league play with Cuyahoga on Wednesday (March 25).
Game One: Lakeland 3, Marietta 8
Kandis Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored to pace the Lakeland offense. Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) and Carynn McCreight (Willoughby, Ohio / Geneva) each drove in one run for the Lakers, who registered three runs on ten hits.
Sophomore Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) fell to 0-4 on the season after allowing eight runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Game Two: Lakeland 5, Marietta 8
Lakeland dropped game two despite 15 hits as host Marietta erupted for 21 hits and eight runs in Friday's finale. Kandis Laseke went 3-for-4 with another double while Taylor Wawrowski drove in two. Amy McDonnell (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) went 3-for-4 and Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) scored twice as Lakeland built a 5-0 lead through four-and-a-half innings.
Marietta responded with a five-run fifth to pull even before a three-run, walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh ended the game. Wawrowski took the loss after giving up the homer while Gustin took the no-decision.

LORAIN, Ohio (March 13, 2015) – Host Oberlin College scored nine runs on ten hits while holding the Lakers to just two runs on five hits to pick up a 9-2 victory on Friday night. The Lakers fall to 1-4 on the season and will look to bounce back on Friday (March 20) when they travel to Marietta for a non-conference double-header.
Freshman Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) went 2-for-4 with an RBI while sophomore Becca Svoboda (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Nordonia) drove in one in the setback.
Freshman Kandis Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) and classmate Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) each scored a run for Lakeland while Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) suffered her first loss of the season and dropped to 1-1 on the year.
Baldauf allowed seven runs (six earned) and walked a pair while striking out three in four innings before giving way to Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon). Wawrowski allowed two unearned runs and fanned three in two innings of relief.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 12, 2015) – The Lakeland softball team took game one 3-2 before surrendering a late lead in the finale and falling 5-4 to visiting Grand Rapids in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Cleveland State University.
Game One: Lakeland 3, Grand Rapids 2
Lydia Baldauf (Thompson, Ohio / Ledgemont) earned her first collegiate win in the circle with a complete-game effort. The freshman right-hander scattered seven hits while striking three. She allowed a pair of earned runs in the top of the seventh inning but worked out of a late jam to collect the victory and improve to 1-1 on the year.
Lakeland broke open a scoreless game with a three-run sixth inning. Katie Uminski (Canton, Ohio / Canton South) drilled a run-scoring double to plate Halle McKinley (Eastlake, Ohio / Eastlake North) before Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) doubled the lead on the next at-bat with an RBI single to score Kandis Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria). Tayler Gustin (Madison, Ohio / Madison) stretched the lead to three with an RBI groundout to drive in Uminski from third.
Grand Rapids threatened in the top half of the seventh, scoring two runs on Courtney Young's triple but Baldauf was able to get the next out on a game-ending pop fly to strand the tying run at third and pick up the win.
Game Two: Lakeland 4, Grand Rapids 5
Grand Rapids erased a two-run deficit with a three-run sixth inning to salvage a split with a victory in game two.
The visitors opened the scoring in the top of the first with a pair of early runs before the hosts rallied for two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to pull level. Halle McKinley's RBI double in the bottom of the second inning plated Becca Svoboda (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Nordonia), who slid into home just ahead of the throw to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead.
Two innings later, Amy McDonnell (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) drove in Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) with an RBI single to double the advantage.
The Raiders seized control with the big sixth inning before forcing the Lakers to strand the tying run at second in their final at-bat.
Taylor Wawrowski suffered the loss in the circle and dropped to 0-2 on the young season. The sophomore allowed five earned runs on seven hits while fanning four in the setback.
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow (March 13) when they take on Oberlin College at the All-Pro Sports Complex in Lorain at 9 p.m.

GREENVILLE, Pa. (February 27, 2015) – The Lakeland Community College softball team opened the season with a pair of close losses to NCAA Division III Thiel College on Friday evening inside the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The Lakers return to action on Friday, March 12 when they host Region XII foe Grand Rapids Community College at Cleveland State University.
Game One: Lakeland 6, Thiel 7 (8 Innings)
Sophomore Taylor Wawrowski (Chardon) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI but suffered the loss in the circle in extra innings after 0.2 innings of relief. The Lakers held leads in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings but could not keep the hosts for rallying for the victory.
Thiel scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at five before erasing a one-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth with two more to escape with a 7-6 victory.
Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and hit her first career home run while Katlyn Sartain (Eastlake North) was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
Amy McDonnell (Mentor) stole two bases and scored a pair of runs for Lakeland.
Lydia Baldauf (Ledgemont) took the no-decision after allowing five earned runs over seven innings in his first collegiate start. The freshman walked three and struck out two while scattering 11 hits.
Halle McKinley (Eastlake North) and Kaitlyn Laseke (Elyria) each homered for the Lakers in a 7-3 loss in game two. Katie Uminski (Canton South), Tayler Gustin (Madison), and Wawrowski each collected two hits for the Lakers, who surrendered the game's first two runs in the bottom of the first inning and were unable to rally back.
After trimming the deficit to one after the top of fourth inning, Thiel countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to stretch the lead to three. A three-run sixth would prove to be the difference and limited the impact of run-scoring innings for the Lakers in the sixth and seventh.
Wawrowski scattered 12 hits and allowed seven runs (five earned) in six innings in his first start of the season. The sophomore finished with three walks and a pair of strikeouts but dropped to 0-2 on the season.
KIRTLAND, Ohio (October 27, 2014) – Head softball coach Jeff Morganti announced the signing of Taylor Wawrowski (Macedonia, Ohio / Chardon) on Thursday afternoon. Wawrowski will enter the spring semester as a sophomore transfer after spending the 2014 season as a walk-on with the Cleveland State University (NCAA Division I) softball program.
Wawrowski appeared in three games for a Vikings team which amassed a 24-20 overall record last season. She scored a run in a 7-1 victory over Detroit on April 27.
A former first team all-conference selection and team MVP at Chardon High School, Wawrowski hit .490 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs as a senior. She earned Honorable Mention accolades as a freshman before garnering second team all-league honors as a sophomore and junior. The Hilltoppers won a pair of sectional championships (2009, 2013) during her four-year varsity career.
At Lakeland, Wawrowski will pitch and play first base.
Coach Morganti on Wawrowski: "We're excited Taylor is joining our softball team. She's an excellent student and very talented softball player. She'll certainly gives us depth in the circle. She'll help us defensively at first base and in the middle part of our batting order."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (May 6, 2014 ) – Sophomores Shayla Purnell (Kent, Ohio / Theodore Roosevelt) and Chantel Smithberger (Madison, Ohio / Madison) have been named All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) in their final season with the Lakeland softball program.
The duo finished first or second in nearly every offensive category this season. Smithberger, who earned OCCAC honors for the second straight season, finished fifth in the conference and first on the team with a .468 batting average. The sophomore catcher led the Lakers in hits (37), RBIs (22), and on base percentage (.523) while finishing second in doubles (12), homeruns (3), and runs scored (29).
Her career at Lakeland includes two all-conference selections and an all-Region XII nod. Additionally, Smithberger was a two-time winner of the athletic department's female athlete of the year award.
Purnell led the Lakers in homeruns (8), triples (4), and runs scored (30) while finishing second on the team in hits (32), RBIs (21), and average (.386). She wraps up her career with 18 homeruns, 62 runs scored, and 48 RBIs as a two-year starter for the Lakers.
Coach Morganti: "Chantel and Shayla are both deserving of this honor. They posted better numbers at the plate than a year ago. We'll miss that production from the middle part of our lineup. More impressive was their versatility in the field, playing two different positions during the course of a game throughout the season. Both volunteered to pitch in a time of need. That really speaks to their character and team commitment."

KIRTLAND, Ohio (June 24, 2014) – Katie Uminski, a senior catcher at Canton South High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball program for the 2014-15 academic year. Uminski was a four-year varsity player and two-time all-conference selection as a member of the Wildcats.
As a junior, Uminski hit .435 with 35 RBIs en route to second team all-conference honors from the Northeastern Buckeye Conference. As a senior, she posted a .487 average with 35 RBIs and was named first team all-conference. A merit roll student and member of the choir, Umisnki also played on the varsity basketball and appeared in the Summit County/Stark County softball all-star game.
The daughter of Debra and Edward Uminski, Katie plans to pursue a degree in American Sign Language at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti on Uminski: "We've added depth to our catching position by signing Katie. We expect her to come in and compete for a starting position. The Canton-Akron area produces very good softball players. Katie will help us behind the plate and in the middle part of our lineup. She's excited to be coming to Lakeland and we're excited to have her."
The daughter of Bonnie and Jeff Baldauf, she spent the past year enrolled at Lakeland through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) program and was named to the Dean's List after the fall semester.
Coach Morganti on Baldauf: "We're very pleased Lydia has decided to come to Lakeland to further her education and play softball. She's familiar with the college, having taken PSEO classes here. Lydia's a good student and will fit in well with our other recruits and returning players. She gives us pitching depth and can also play the outfield."
KIRTLAND, Ohio (April 24, 2014) – Halle McKinley, a standout dual sport student-athlete at nearby Eastlake North High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lakeland Community College softball program for the 2014-15 academic year.
McKinley played four years of varsity basketball and softball, helping the Rangers claim three Premier Athletic Conference (PAC) championships in basketball as well as a PAC and District title in softball.
In addition to experiencing a wealth of team success, McKinley earned a number of individual awards along the way. As a freshman she was named Second Team All-PAC and News-Herald Player of the Week during the Rangers' conference-winning basketball season. That same year the softball team claimed a District championship.
As a sophomore, McKinley garnered Second Team All-PAC accolades in both softball and basketball while being selected as the defensive MVP in softball.
One year later, she was selected Honorable Mention (basketball) and First Team (softball) All-PAC and was named Offensive MVP in softball after breaking the school record for hits in a season.
In her final scholastic season, McKinley helped guide the basketball team to another PAC Championship en route to Second Team All-Conference and Ranger of the Year award. She was also named News-Herald Player of the Week on January 16.
The daughter of Shannon and Brandon Smith and Mike McKinley, she plans to major in Nursing and is currently participating in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti on McKinley: "Halle plays the game with high energy. She's been a four-year varsity starting shortstop and fields that position well with exceptional range. She can also play third base, so we like her versatility. Halle is a good contact hitter and can hit the ball to all parts of the field. She is a very good student and will fit into our program well."
Tayler Gustin
Tayler Gustin is an honors student and three-year varsity player at Madison High School, where she is a two-time Team MVP (2011, 2013) and three-time Golden Glove winner (2011-13). Gustin earned the Academic Achievement Award from Madison in each of the past four years while also competing as a member of the basketball team. She earned Honorable Mention all-Premier Athletic Conference (PAC) honors as a junior while helping the Blue Streaks make a district final appearance. The daughter of Denene and Michael Gustin, Tayler plans to study forensic science at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti on Gustin: "I've seen Tayler play for the last four years in high school and travel ball. This is her fourth year as a varsity starter for Madison, who played in the Division-1 District Finals last season. She's a left-handed bat we need in our lineup and hit .347 last season. Tayler can play either third base or shortstop. Her height and athleticism give her great range at both positions."
Kandis Laseke
Kandis Laseke is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society at Elyria High School. She helped the Pioneers advance to the Division I state finals as a junior while also competing as a member of the volleyball team. The daughter of Lisa and Chris Laseke, Kandis plans to study accounting and finance at Lakeland.
Kaitlyn Laseke
Kaitlyn Laseke also started for Elyria's state runner-up team and was named the team's most improved player as a junior. A two-sport student-athlete (softball and volleyball), Laseke also garnered the Ray Wilson Award. She plans to study criminology at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti on Kandis and Kaitlyn Laseke: ""Kaitlyn and Kandis play for one of the top Division-1 high school programs in the state. Elyria has produced so many talented softball players over the years. We're extremely happy we're getting two more. Kaitlyn and Kandis started for their 2013 state runner-up team. They are very competitive. Both are versatile defensively. Kaitlyn will catch this year at Elyria but played the outfield last season. Kandis will be Elyria's starting shortstop but played outfield last season for the Pioneers. Both hit for power and average. They're definitely game changers."
Kyler Steven-Lovejoy
Kyler Steven-Lovejoy is an honor roll student and three-sport athlete at Shaker Heights High School. She was named to the honor roll as a junior while competing in soccer, softball, and track. In softball, she collected team MVP (2013) honors and was named to the Lake Erie League (LEL) all-star team. She was also the recipient of the Ronald O'Neil Starks girl's track award and the outstanding freshman award (2010) as a member of the track team. Her 4x400 relay team captured first place at the Mentor Cardinal Relays (2011) while her 4x100 team placed second at the LEL Lake Division meet (2011). The daughter of Terri and Craig Williams, Kyler plans to pursue an associate's degree at Lakeland.
Coach Morganti on Steven-Lovejoy: "We saw Kyler play winterball and felt very strongly about what she could add to our program. Her high school coach, Amanda Rabatin, who's also a Lakeland graduate, raves about her. Kyler has played softball for only a few years after running track. Her athleticism is magnified on the softball field. Her better softball years are in front of her, and we're glad we get the chance to watch her grow into a prolific college player. Kyler will play the outfield for us."

Coaches Bios Description
The 2014 season was the first for Lakeland softball under the direction of head coach Jeff Morganti. Morganti was hired in the summer of 2013 and brought with him a wealth of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level. He has coached softball for the past ten years and spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Lake Erie College.
In his two years with the Storm, four student-athletes earned honorable mention all-conference accolades from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Additionally, ten were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team for carrying a cumulative GPA of 3.0-3.49 and eight more earned GLIAC Academic Excellence Team selections for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.
Prior to his tenure in Painesville, Morganti spent eight seasons leading a pair of high school varsity programs. From 2003-2009 he was the head coach at Eastlake North High School where he led the Rangers to three conference titles and the first district title and regional appearance in program history. He was named News-Herald and Plain-Dealer coach of the year in 2003 and 2008 after guiding Eastlake North to Premier Athletic Conference (PAC) championships. In his seven years at the helm the Rangers amassed 125 wins and boasted 20 First Team All-Conference players. He then spent a year as the head varsity coach at West Geauga High School before accepting the position with Lake Erie College.
Morganti becomes the fifth coach in the 27-year history of Lakeland softball and will inherit one of the strongest offensive lineups in the region. Last year, the Lakers finished ninth in the nation (NJCAA Division II) in homeruns with 48 despite playing at least five fewer games than every other team in the top-10. Lakeland went 22-18, finished third in the OCCAC, and advanced to the semifinals of the Region 12, District H tournament.
The Kirtland, Ohio native is a cum laude graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in Mass-Media Communication. He went on to earn a teaching certificate in special education and a Master's in Communication from Cleveland State University. He has been employed as an intervention specialist with the Willoughby-Eastlake school district since 1996. A member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (OHSFSCA), Morganti resides in Mentor with his wife, Deanna.
Head Coach Jeff Morganti recently concluded his first season as head coach of the Lakeland softball program.
Shelley Monas brings over three decades of coaching and administrative experience to the Lakeland softball program in her first season as an assistant coach. Monas' coaching career includes stints at Mercyhurst College (NCAA Division II) and Allegheny College (NCAA Division III) as well as numerous high school programs.
Her career began at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she helped guide the softball program to four consecutive Keystone Conference championships from 1979-83 and posted the only undefeated season in school history. In 1985, she was named head varsity softball coach at Northwestern High School in nearby Albion, Pennsylvania. In her five years at Northwestern, Monas led the program to the quarterfinals of the state tournament and the first undefeated season in Erie County League history. She earned Erie County League Coach of the Year honors that same season.
She returned to the collegiate ranks in 1990 after being named head softball coach at Allegheny College. In short time, Monas re-established Allegheny as a national contender. She helped guide the Gators to an NCAA Regional Championship in 1993 en route to National and Regional Coach of the Year honors from the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA). While at Allegheny, she also served as a member of the NCAA Division III All-American selection committee.
Monas spent the subsequent seven years as athletic director at Seton School in Meadville, Pennsylvania where she was responsible for the leadership and direction of the entire athletic program.
She returned to coaching at Meadville High School where she led the varsity program to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, six straight Crawford County Conference championships, and a District X championship from 1997-2002. In 2003 she took over at Edgewood High School in Ashtabula. Monas helped the Warriors advance to the OHSAA State semifinals in 2006 and claim seven consecutive Northeastern Conference (NEC) championships from 2003-09. Monas was a six-time Coach of the Year selection by the Star-Beacon during that span, which included seven sectional championships and six appearances in the district finals.
Currently, Monas works at Perry High School where she serves as an online health teacher and faculty manager. She is also a staff member at the Perry Community Fitness Center. She resides in Perry with her husband, John. Their son, Kent, attended Cleveland State University where he was four-year member of the Vikings' golf team.
