Programs for Women

Student Mothers Achieving Real Triumph (SMART)

The SMART program is a support and networking program for student mothers. Participants must have demonstrated financial need and will attend school at least halftime. Program activities take place on weekday mornings.
SMART information

As a group, SMART students will:

  • Take an English class and skills for college success, equaling 6 credits.
  • Attend training workshops and seminars on topics related to overcoming barriers which could keep you from succeeding in college.
  • Meet weekly for support and networking with peers.
  • Receive financial assistance from the Women's Center.

Come to Lakeland and start classes with other student moms. Tackle your education together!

Be SMART!

First Rung

The First Rung to College program was started in response to people who wish to start college but did not graduate from high school.

The First Rung to College will allow you to prepare for your GED and prepare for the move to college at the same time. The program will run for 15 weeks along with Lakeland's semesters. By the end of the program, participants will have completed an introductory college level course, Skills for College Success, and be test-ready for the GED. All classes will take place in Lakeland's classroom at the Kirtland main campus. Pretesting is available in Kirtland.
