A donor advised fund, or DAF, is a separately managed account established by individuals, families, or groups that is maintained and operated by a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation or a financial service company. Think of it as a charitable savings account you can set up at any time that allows you to make contributions, receive an immediate tax benefit, and recommend grants from the fund to qualified nonprofit organizations.
You can donate directly to The Lakeland Foundation by providing the following information to the sponsoring organization of your fund. Your sponsoring organization will then complete the transaction to distribute funds to The Lakeland Foundation.
Information to Make a Gift from a Donor Advised Fund:
Legal Name: The Lakeland Foundation
Address: 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, OH 44094
Federal Tax ID Number: 34-1369714
Please be sure to include the purpose or fund name at The Lakeland Foundation to which you'd like your gift directed.
We encourage you to speak with a financial or legal adviser to determine whether establishing or giving through a donor advised fund is a good option for your circumstances. If you have questions about the information you need to provide to the sponsoring organization of your donor advised fund, please contact Tina Baucher, interim executive director, at 440.525.7103 or tbaucher1@lakelandcc.edu.

A Charitable IRA Rollover (also referred to as a QCD — a qualified charitable distribution) allows donors to make an immediate tax-free gift by transferring up to $100,000 directly from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA to The Lakeland Foundation (other qualified retirement plans such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s are not eligible). While this type of gift is not income to you and is therefore not tax-deductible, a Charitable IRA Rollover gift allows you to satisfy your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) and avoids income tax on IRA withdrawals. You must be at least 70 ½ years old to take advantage of this opportunity.

When you donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, your contribution and tax deduction are greater than they would be if you were to sell the shares and donate the cash proceeds.

Would you like to potentially double the impact of your gift to The Lakeland Foundation? Many businesses will match charitable donations, either in full or in part, made by employees, retirees, and/or their spouses to The Lakeland Foundation. Many companies will also allow employees to submit their matching gift request for up to one year after the date the donation was made to The Lakeland Foundation.
Is your employer one of them? If your company offers this incentive, simply include the appropriate form from your employer with your gift or send it to us after your gift has been made, and we will take care of the rest. If you're not sure whether your company offers a matching gift program, find out now by searching for your company in Charity Navigator's free search engine at CharityNavigator.org, check your company's intranet portal for information, or ask your HR department if your employer matches gifts.

Our Lakeland colleagues not only support students through their work every day, but they also donate thousands of dollars each year to Foundation efforts in support of student success at Lakeland. If you're a Lakeland employee, payroll deduction makes it even easier to give.
"One of the biggest misconceptions about Lakeland is that the education isn't the same as a four-year. It's completely the opposite! Here at Lakeland it's so much more personal....I heard about the honors program at my orientation. I didn't even know that they had one here. I was hesitant about joining it, but then heard about the possibility of an honors scholarship. I also liked the idea about being with other peers around me who were serious about their schoolwork. That was a deciding factor."
"I chose Lakeland Community College because of the veteran-friendly environment here and the awesome professors I've had the privilege to work with. For any veteran out there, I highly encourage them to come to Lakeland Community College. The comradery here of the veteran community is like no other. Our SVA chapter is Top 5 in the country. I'm studying business administration and marketing. My father was a businessman, and after my time in the Marine Corps, I wanted to follow in his footsteps."
"I plan to study child psychology....Who wants to choose between paying rent and paying tuition? Nobody. I'm always grateful for these scholarships....At the time I was really iffy about playing sports in college, and my dad called me and said, 'At least, come look.' I got the tour and I love it up here....This isn't something I'm ever going to forget. I'm going to go to graduate school and will still be thinking, 'I wouldn't even be here if I didn't have a scholarship at Lakeland, where my beginning was.' They [the donors] don't know us and they're giving us a bigger opportunity than they could ever imagine."
"For me, Lakeland was not the obvious choice. But because I came to Lakeland, I'm actually one year ahead - I will be a junior next year! And will be getting my first co-op soon. If I didn't come to Lakeland, I'd still be a sophomore....I never used to like chemistry until I came to Lakeland, actually. My huge inspiration is Professor Roskos. His bubbly personality has really inspired me to bring out the good in everything. Now I feel like I can really change the world and make everything better."
"Initially I came to Lakeland because I wanted to get back into taking college classes and it was really close by where I lived….I hope to pursue a communications degree from Lake Erie College through the University Partnership, which is really nice because it's right across from the Lakeland campus so I know the facility and it offered a really accessible way to get a four-year degree but still stay in the area…. One thing that I think is great about Lakeland is there are people of so many different ages. People older than me, people who are still in high school, who come to take these classes and so it gives you a really great mix of individuals and people to meet and network with."
"Mary Jo and I see great wisdom in the old adage: ‘GIVE a man a fish and he will eat for a day. TEACH a man HOW to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.
"We deeply believe in the value of education, and much of our volunteer work and charitable giving focuses on quality, values-driven high school and collegiate programs. We have always been so inspired by the courage and persistence of our Lakeland students who often face great obstacles and challenges to starting and/or completing their studies at the College. Yet the knowledge and skills gained at Lakeland are vital to their future success and happiness, particularly in today's complex and technically advanced marketplace. As such, anytime we can help students reduce or eliminate barriers to their educational journey, we feel privileged to help. Bottom line: our entire community grows stronger and more resilient each time a Lakeland graduate receives their certificate or degree from Lakeland. GO LAKERS!"
"My wife, Patricia, who passed away a few years ago, was there at the very beginning of Lakeland. She worked on the Levy campaign that started Lakeland and was in the first full graduating class in 1969. The degree she received helped her become a Senior Computer Programmer in the Engineering Department at Bailey Controls. She always wanted to give to organizations that helped people and the Lakeland Foundation was the perfect organization. She and I know how important an education is and how an educated community is good for all.
"When I worked as a staff accountant for Lakeland in the late seventies, part of my job was to account for the monies in the Endowment and Scholarship Funds and also work closely with the Finance Aid Office. I saw a larger number of students who did not qualify for Federal or State grants but still needed financial help. Therefore, we established an endowment fund that feeds a scholarship fund for those students that ‘fell through the cracks,' so to speak, so they can achieve their educational goals.
"It is good to give back! You can establish your own scholarship, as we did, or donate to the Lakeland Foundation General Scholarship Fund."
A planned gift, also known as a legacy gift, is any gift that is part of a donor's overall financial and/or estate planning.
Making a planned gift to The Lakeland Foundation, regardless of your income or age, is a powerful way to open doors to education for generations of Lakeland students to come. Planned giving lets you defer your gift as part of your overall financial planning process, and many options cost you nothing during your lifetime. Other options provide income to you or allow you to make a small investment during your lifetime, and then provide a larger gift in the future through your estate.
You may want to consider a planned gift in one of the following forms, which could offer you the greatest benefit in terms of your income, capital gains, and estate tax savings as best befits your financial situation:
A bequest is a gift that is made as part of a will or trust. It can be made as a specific amount, percentage, remainder, or a total of your estate. With proper planning, a bequest allows you to save on estate taxes, provide for your family, distribute your assets according to your wishes, and lets you leave a legacy without giving up assets during your lifetime.
Bequests of $10,000 or more are most often used by donors to establish an endowed, named fund in memory or tribute (for example, "The Jane and John Doe Family Scholarship Fund") that generates support for Lakeland students through scholarships or other efforts in perpetuity.
A beneficiary designation is one of the simplest ways to make a gift to The Lakeland Foundation. By filling out a beneficiary designation form, you can specify the individuals and charities you want to support, and you can also specify the percentage of the assets you want each beneficiary to receive. Beneficiary designations are available when giving the following assets:
Retirement Plan Assets
Designating The Lakeland Foundation as the beneficiary for some or all of what's left in your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other qualified plan when they end has a number of benefits. It removes highly-taxed assets from your estate and allows you to preserve non-retirement assets for family or heirs.
Life Insurance
Naming The Lakeland Foundation as irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a fully paid policy allows you to take an income tax deduction equivalent to its cash value. Naming us as a contingent beneficiary allows for greater flexibility and security for your family or heirs. You can also assign ownership of an existing policy that you no longer need for your plans, or initiate a new policy and designate The Lakeland Foundation as owner and beneficiary.
enables you to make a tax-deducible gift while removing taxable assets from your estate and generating income for yourself, your family, or other beneficiary for life or for a specified period. There are two types of charitable remainder trusts:
For more information on these and other planned giving options, you can access our Leave a Legacy at Lakeland brochure.
To include The Lakeland Foundation in your planned giving directives, please use our legal name and federal tax ID number noted below.
Legal Name: The Lakeland Foundation
Address: 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, OH 44094
Federal Tax ID Number: 34-1369714
Find sample language to use for bequests here clicking here.
It's important to notify us of your planned gift so we can ensure your intentions are honored. Many retirement plan administrators assume no obligation to notify a charity of your designation or to monitor whether your gift designations are followed. We will be pleased to work with you and your attorney or financial adviser on your options to make a planned gift, or you can complete a confidential intention of future philanthropy form.
(Download a PDF version of this form that can be returned by US Mail.)
When you initially create a donor advised fund with a sponsoring organization or community foundation, you will typically be asked to indicate whether the assets in your account should be distributed to charities of your choice upon your passing, or whether you wish to name "successor advisers," such as family, friends, or other representatives, who will continue to recommend grants to charities from the account so it will continue to function as a donor advised fund. Your sponsoring organization can review all of the options available to you and what benefits they may provide to your estate and for your philanthropic wishes. Find more information on giving through a donor advised fund here.
Yes - if you are at least 70½ years old with a traditional IRA or Roth IRA, this may be an option for you. Please visit our Ways You Can Give page for information on giving through charitable IRA rollover.
We'll be pleased to assist you and your attorney or financial planner in deciding which of these or other planned gift opportunities will be most beneficial to you and to The Foundation. Please contact Tina Baucher, interim executive director, at 440.525.7103 or tbaucher1@lakelandcc.edu to discuss next steps, or complete a confidential intention of future philanthropy form.

The Lakeland Foundation inspires support for Lakeland Community College's mission to provide quality learning opportunities to meet the social and economic needs of the community. Gifts to The Lakeland Foundation allow our students to progress and complete their academic goals, juggle the demands of family, career and college life, re-tool their careers, enrich their lives, and fulfill their dreams. Our priorities are to empower student success, promote workforce development, and serve as a catalyst and connector to engage and enrich our community.
As public sources of funding decrease, there is a rapidly growing need for private gifts that support student success. The Lakeland Foundation relies on the generosity of our friends, alumni, corporations, and philanthropic foundations to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Endowed funds require a minimum initial investment of $10,000, which is then invested in accordance with a Lakeland Foundation Board approved policy through an independent investment firm. Endowed funds live on in perpetuity with only a portion of the endowment income available for spending allocations each year. The spending allocation policy is reviewed periodically and is approved by The Lakeland Foundation Board of Directors.
Non-endowed (or current use) funds are not invested and are used for current needs. A minimum initial gift of $1,500 is required to name a current use fund. As funds are depleted, they must be replenished by new donations.

Lakeland Community College enrolls more than 12,000 students each year. Our students come from across our region and are as diverse as the region itself. They are high achievers and they are students with daunting learning challenges. They are entering from high school and they are adults seeking to better their position in life. Many students live at or below the poverty threshold. Some are single, working moms. Some are veterans readjusting to civilian life. Whatever their differences, they are all striving to achieve the same goal – a better future for themselves and their families.
More than 50 percent of our current student body requires some amount of financial assistance to attend Lakeland Community College, and The Lakeland Foundation plays a critical role in their success. Each year, The Lakeland Foundation provides scholarship support of approximately $500,000 to hundreds of students.
Whether through our General Scholarship Fund, donating to an existing scholarship fund, or creating a new fund, your gift can make all the difference in a student's success.

The Lakeland Foundation supports a variety of programs that support the needs of a diverse student population. Veterans, minority students, LGBTQ students and many others benefit from programs designed to meet their specific needs. In recent years, The Wells Fargo Veterans Lounge was established to help veterans assimilate back into civilian life. The Lakeland Student Engagement and Leadership Department was able to provide safe zone training for students and staff in working with the LGBTQ community.
The Lakeland Foundation also provides for specific programs created by faculty to enrich the academic experience. Recently, these programs have included lectures at The City Club of Cleveland, visits to area museums, The Cleveland Orchestra concerts and more. These are often programs and services that would not exist without the generous support of the community.
Lakeland Community College is committed to providing innovative educational tools and programs that involve students in hands-on learning experiences, helping to ensure their success – both in the classroom and in life.
HIVE is a hub for students, faculty and the community designed to reframe mindsets and prepare individuals and teams to solve real-world challenges. HIVE engages learners as creators, collaborators, thinkers, explorers, instigators, dreamers and doers in a transformational experience to set students up for success in the classroom and beyond our walls.
We are dedicated to cultivating experiences that allow our students to learn actively in diverse environments. A variety of interdisciplinary green learning spaces have been created as a teaching tool and strategy to enable students and faculty to make connections across content areas. Engaging in real-world, hands-on learning designed to put theory into practice, Lakelands green spaces spark new conversations, create unexpected connections, and calm and focus the mind.
The Faculty Challenge Grant program provides funding that might not otherwise be available to faculty for innovative or pilot programs designed to further enhance or enrich the student experience. Grants may also be awarded for programs that allow for a broader knowledge exchange among faculty to share teaching approaches or develop new methods that promote student engagement and success.
Whether it is preparing our students to meet workforce demands, serving as a catalyst and forum for commuity issues or providing for the region's businesses, Lakeland is committed to supporting our commuity.
