What You'll Learn - Classroom and Coursework

Our nuclear engineering technology curriculum emphasizes real-world scenarios faced by nuclear power plant operators. You'll gain expertise in:

  • Solving technical problems encountered in nuclear plant operations.
  • Performing research projects and experiments related to nuclear technology.
  • Analyzing data and effectively communicating findings with recommendations.
  • Working collaboratively within diverse and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Understanding the importance of radiation safety, environmental management, and ethical considerations in the nuclear field.
  • Recognizing the need for lifelong learning to stay current with advancements in the nuclear industry.

In addition to classroom studies, eligible students could spend 10 weeks in the summer working at a nuclear power plant in a paid internship. The salary from this internship could essentially pay for the cost of the tuition and books for a portion of the program. Internship students could earn two technical elective credits toward the completion of their degree. During the internship, students rotate through the plant's maintenance, operations, radiation protection and chemistry departments. This gives the students an opportunity to see firsthand the variety and nature of the different functions within a commercial nuclear plant.

Graduate Outcomes and Industry Recognition

Graduates of this program are prepared to pursue careers in various sectors of the nuclear industry, including nuclear power plant operations, nuclear medicine and aerospace engineering.

Upon successful program completion, students meeting specific academic standards are eligible to receive a prestigious Nuclear Uniform Curriculum certificate jointly issued by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and Lakeland. This valuable credential demonstrates your qualifications and preparedness for a successful career in the nuclear field.

Important Considerations for Employment

While this program provides a strong foundation, it's important to note that specific employment requirements within the nuclear industry may vary. Many utilities require successful completion of background checks, drug tests and psychological screenings.
