Communication skills are increasingly desired by employers as some of the top soft-skills needed in the job market.
The communications studies department strengthens students' informed, critical and analytical communication practices as collaborative members of a diverse, democratic society.
The department extends students' communicative competencies with respect to presentations and interpersonal encounters by fostering self-reflection, ethical advocacy and responsible actions.
Our courses very often serve as launching points for students to the more specific studies of art history, philosophy, history and literature. Students are introduced to the basic building blocks of a variety of the liberal arts with the intention that this will aid not only in the determining of a more specific interest, but also in preparing the student for the rigors of the new discipline.
The messages evoked in the liberal arts are powerful ones indeed. They can convey new ideas, snap the bindings of suffocating prejudices, and sharpen one's ability to think clearly, creatively and analytically. Humanities courses provide the keys necessary to unlock the door to a better understanding of the wonders of the arts, and in doing so, allow students the opportunity to participate in a life more enriched in the arts.
Successful completion of an Association of Arts in communication studies may lead to employment in a variety of different occupations. Below are examples, some of which may include additional degree work at a transfer institution. Northeast Ohio median salaries in 2020 for public relations specialists was $60,680 and for speech and market research analysts and marketing specialists was $61,690. See O*Net OnLine for additional wage and employment trends as well as required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Lakeland has been a very enriching and welcoming experience, making way for a great transition from high school to college. My experience here has been incredible so far. The extra clubs and events Lakeland has to offer gives you the chance to experience a college life on a fabulous budget. My biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of everything on campus: the events, the gym, the clubs, the food bank. Go ahead and get out of your comfort zone to try them out. My favorite thing about Lakeland is the perfect balance it offers between academic support and personal well-being. The quiet study areas are great for focused learning, and the gym helps me feel stay fit and energized. The supportive professors and mentors are always there to guide me. Plus, the wide variety of courses offered makes it great place to grown both academically and personally. Mili Jariwala Medical Assisting and Associate of Science
