2020 Excellence in Teaching Awards: Nominations are accepted fall and spring semesters for the 2020 Excellence in Teaching Awards.  Winners will be announced at the Service Awards in April. Deadline for fall nominations is December 2.

The Excellence in Teaching & Professional Development Committee met on October 30 to review six Faculty Challenge Grant applications for fall 2019:

  • Rick Amster/Nora Gee/Counseling: First-Year Experience Faculty Training: Using Equity to Bridge the Achievement Gap for Lakeland's Students
  • William Davenport/Philosophy & Chemistry Collaboration: Improving Logical Thinking Skills in the Arts & Sciences
  • Tom Hyland/Megan Mamolen/Library: Celebration of Research 2020
  • Christine Jerson/Health Information Management Technology: Storyline 360
  • Tom Hyland/Manda Lueders/Megan Mamolen/Library: College Archives Project
  • Susan McClendon/Nursing: Homeless Stand Down/Nursing Student Partnership


The Projects Review Committee of The Lakeland Foundation will meet in November to review all grant applications for fall 2019.


The Lakeland Foundation funded the following Faculty Challenge Grant applications for spring 2019:

  • Lakeland Literary Festival & Bookfair/Jamie DeMonte/English
  • Chagrin River Review Expansion/Tobin Terry/English
  • LAMPS Pilot Project/Paul Zachlin/Mathematics


The Lakeland Foundation funded the following Mastin Fund Grant applications for spring 2019:

  • Atmosphere Adventures/Jon Loufman/Physical Science
  • Brain Awareness Day/Andrea Musial/Biology
  • Mastin/Lakeland Science Classroom Grants/Phil Roskos/Chemistry


The Excellence in Teaching & Professional Development Committee sponsored the following Excellence in Teaching Lecture/Luncheon spring semester:

  • Creating Engaging Online Classes presented by Sue Baker


The HLC Persistence and Completion Team sponsored the following Integrating Experiential Learning Strategies in Your Class sessions spring semester:

  • Creating Relevance Through Community Connection presented by Alice Walker/Human Services
  • How to Exercise More and Ditch Fast Food presented by Lynne Gabriel/Psychology
  • Using Problem-Based Learning to Solve a Homicide presented by Dan Winterich/Criminal Justice

Excellence in Teaching & Professional Development

Committee Charge

The Excellence in Teaching & Professional Development Committee will encourage, develop, and support professional enrichment opportunities for faculty at Lakelkand Community College.  The committee will continually review relevant research, trends, and issues and conduct activities that will promote quality teaching and learning.  Full-time faculty members may apply to this committee for funds to engage in professional activity such as attending a conference, workshop or seminar.
